As 2015 draws to an end, we look back on the best and worst health and fitness trends I put to the test this year at You Totally Got This HQ.
MISS
Garcinia Cambogia – an exotic fruit that gives you the body of a Victoria’s Secret Angel. You guessed it, this health and fitness trend was a total fail. After taking these diet pills for a month, the only thing that was lighter was my wallet.
HIT
Juice Cleanses – Okay so I would have cut off my right arm for a piece of bread on Day 2, but by the end of this trend test, I felt healthier than Gwyneth Paltrow. If you have had a little too much fun over festive season a juice cleanse may be just what you need to get back on track.
MISS
Ear candling – removing ear wax by sticking a hollow candle in your ear and lighting it …what could go wrong? Well aside from the risk of injury, scientific studies have shown it doesn’t work. So did ear candling light my fire? Ummmmm no! Save your cash folks.
HIT
Oil Pulling –Swish some coconut oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes every morning. Say waaaah? You be cray cray! I’m still not totally convinced that oil pulling releases the toxins that build up in your mouth overnight, but one year on, I‘m still swishing. My skin loves it, and my teeth are whiter and brighter. If this is crazy I sooooooo OWN IT!
MISS
The 5/2 Diet – What if I told you that you could eat anything you wanted 5 days a week. The catch, 2 days a week you are restricted to a measly 500 calories. My husband lost 4 kilos in 4 weeks on the 5/2 diet. So why is it a miss? Well, just like a Jedi, the weight returned. If your going to try this one in 2016, may the force be with you.
HIT
Barre– I may not have a body like Queen Bey, but I’m more bootylicious than I was 6 months ago thanks to Barre. And with Barre studios popping up all over my hometown, it looks like I’m not the only one that is digging this ballet and Pilates workout. Want to work your jelly in 2016…go get your barre on.
MISS
Activated Charcoal – It may be a sure fire way to treat poisoning, but claims it cures a hangover are just wiggity wiggity whack. No liver was harmed during this trend test, but I sure took a few headaches for the team!
HIT
Quitting Sugar – Cutting out the sweet stuff made me realise that sugar made me feel crappy. Since quitting sugar with the help of Sarah’s Wilson’s I Quit Sugar 8 week program I no longer feel bloated, my weight doesn’t yo-yo and afternoon slumps are a thing of the past. It’s no surprise that quitting sugar is tipped to be one of the biggest health and wellness trends of 2016.
Thank you for your incredible support this year! Stay tuned for lots of new tips and delish healthy recipes in 2016.
Happy New Year from You Totally Got This HQ!

Ohhh A hit for me has been finding my inner fighter and discovering my love of Muay Thai !
Happy new year to you Rani
D x
That’s a good one Diana! I’ll have to give Muay Thai a try. Happy New Year!
So hay fever hits me every year and I’m not a fan of medication on any day so I usually just suffer through the sneezes and the uncontrollably watery eyes. I had read on several occasions that a shot of apple cider vinegar every morning throughout spring can help so I did it. Firstly I’ll say…. Bbblluurrrgghhhhhhhhto the taste but it did seem to work. It seems Apple
Cider vinegar is a cute of many many thing including pregnancy heartburn ( oh the joys!!! ). You should give it a go Rani, even just to share in the foul taste with me.
Great work and great passion in 2015. I look forward to more tips and yummy pics in 2016 xxx
Since we are sharing I drink apple cider vinegar, warm water and cayenne pepper if I’m ever constipated and it seems to get me moving again. I suffer from hay fever as well, and would love to dump the Telfast. I will definitely read up on this and give it a shot (no pun intended) in Spring. Thanks so much for your incredible support this year. Rani x
Hi rani – what about investigating kombucha? I have started making my own … The first batch turned out pretty good I just need to increase production so I have a regular supply!!! Otherwise wHat about fermented foods generally? They are a big thing at the moment. Happy new year!
Kombucha is on my hit list, in fact I am currently brewing my first batch as we speak! Fingers crossed its a success like yours. Have you been experimenting with any other fermented foods? The only other thing I have done is sauerkraut and just love it- it’s quickly become a fridge essential. Have a great New Year Kerrie x
Let me know how your first batch goes …. I have just finished the first ferment on my second batch. I haven’t tried to make other fermented foods yet …. Getting there slowly!!
Not so good Kerri, it grew mould so I had to dispose of the batch and my one and only Scoby. I will try again though, I should have read up a bit more before my first brew. I didn’t use filtered water which I have read can cause mould because of impurities in the water. Hopefully it will be better luck next time.
